Canal Saint-Martin, Parc de la Villette, Parc des Buttes Chaumont

 I'm a fan of canals and rivers and I'm strongly supporting the idea of full recovery of the navigli system in the historic center of my city, Milan. Walking for kilometers along the great Canal Saint-Martin has been a very exciting experience: I said to myself, here it is an example of how you can transform and enhance a periphery, giving it a soul and a distinctive character. Really well-done!

The Canal Saint-Martin, in fact, gives work to many people and is today the "sea" of the Parisians, thanks to its artificial beaches, with umbrellas, deckchairs, cabins, but also swimming pools, sports facilities, boats to rent and other equipment for the fun to live strictly within the canal. A popular place for recreation for those who cannot afford holidays outside the city but for tourist toos. I definetely reccommend to start your fourth day from Jaurès metro station and see what I mean!

Continuing north-east you'll reach the Parc de la Villette, one of the largest green areas of Paris, the land of fun for kids: 12 thematic gardens, including the famous dragon garden, an immense and amusing slide (80 meters long!), the garden of winds and dunes with lots of surfaces to jump and roll, the bamboo garden with its waterways and sounds-making cascades.

Along the promenade that runs through the gardens you can see many other surprising installations like the Geode, the giant bicycle that emerges from the ground or the house upside down on the tree. All free. For a fee (10 euros per parent-child couple), instead, you can access a private park with super-slippery inflatables, constantly wet with water. So, again: remind to bring the swimsuit and a dry change, you might need them!

At the Villette there are various institutions related to music such as the Zenith arena, the National Superior Conservatory, the City of music, the Philharmonie de Paris auditorium, the CDMC museum. But that's not all: it is worth mentioning that in the north part of the park, completely surrounded by water, you'll meet the Museum of Sciences and Industries, another great place well-tuned with the natural curiosity of kids, thanks also to the presence of dedicated routes (Cité des enfants), of a multimedia library, of a planetarium and of many other interesting sections.

Your long day at the Villette and nearby could end at the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, which is easily reachable on foot proceeding in south-west direction. A real green jewel, it's the third public garden in size in Paris. Built over one hundred and fifty years ago at the behest of Napoleon III, today it is the habitat of numerous species of plants and birds and is the ideal refuge for the hot summer days.

For those who are familiar with Milan parks, It blends the characteristics of the Monte Stella (i.e.: hills shaped by the hand of man in the middle of the city) with the peculiarity of Parco delle Cave (a set of artificial lakes, obtained from former quarries) and is also embellished by the presence of two bridges that connect the island that rises in the middle of the lake to the surrounding meadows and a small temple placed right on the top of the island-rock, from which you can enjoy a beautiful view, which embraces the profiles of Montmartre.

Per me che sono un amante dei canali e che vorrei tanto riportarne in vita qualcuno proprio nel centro storico della mia Milano, percorrere chilometri a piedi lungo il grande Canal Saint-Martin e' stata una esperienza assai appagante: ecco, mi sono detto, come si può trasformare e valorizzare una periferia, donandole un'anima, un carattere distintivo! Il Canal Saint-Martin, infatti, da lavoro a tante persone ed e' oggi il "mare" dei parigini, grazie alle sue spiagge artificiali, con ombrelloni, sdraio, cabine, ma pure piscine, impianti sportivi, barche da affittare e altre attrezzature per il divertimento da vivere rigorosamente all'interno del canale. Un apprezzato luogo di svago, per chi non si può permettere le vacanze fuori città e per i turisti. Da provare!

Proseguendo verso nord-est si incontra il Parc de la Villette, uno dei più grandi di Parigi, il paese dei balocchi per i più piccoli: 12 giardini tematici, tra cui il famoso giardino del dragone, un immenso di e divertentissimo scivolo (lungo ben 80 metri!), il giardino dei venti e delle dune straripante di superfici su cui saltare, lanciarsi e rotolare, il giardino dei bambù con le sue vie d'acqua e cascate sonore. E lungo la promenade che attraversa i giardini si possono fare altri incontri sorprendenti come quello con la Geode o con la bicicletta gigante che affiora dal terreno o ancora la casa capovolta sull'albero. Tuttto gratis. A pagamento (10 euro per coppia genitore-bambino), c'è il parco dei gonfiabili super-scivolosi, costantemente bagnati con l'acqua. Anche qui è d'obbligo portarsi il costume, dei cambi asciutti.

Alla Villette sorgono varie istituzioni legate alla musica come l'arena Zenith, il Conservatorio Nazionale Superiore, la Città della musica, l'auditorium Philharmonie de Paris, il museo CDMC. Ma non è tutto: è bene sapere che a nord del parco, completamente circondato dall'acqua, sorge il Museo delle Scienze e delle Industrie, un altro di quei posti che ben si sposano con la naturale curiosità dei bambini, anche grazie alla presenza di percorsi a loro dedicati (Cité des enfants), alla biblioteca multimediale, al planetarium e a tanto altre interessanti sezioni.

La nostra giornata si è chiusa al Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, che partendo dalla Villette è facilmente raggiungibile a piedi procedendo in direzione sud-ovest. Un vero e proprio gioiello verde, terzo giardino pubblico per dimensioni. Realizzato oltre centocinquant'anni fa per volere di Napoleone III, oggi è habitat di numerose specie di piante e uccelli ed è il rifugio ideale per le calde giornate d'estate. Fonde le caratteristiche di un Monte Stella (delle colline modellate dalla mano dell'uomo nel bel mezzo della città) con quelle di un Parco delle Cave (un laghetto artificiale, ricavato appunto da una ex-cava) ed è, inoltre, impreziosito dalla presenza di due ponti che collegano l'isola che sorge nel mezzo del lago ai prati circostanti e da un tempietto posto proprio sulla sommità dell'isola-collina, da cui si gode di un bel panorama, comprendente anche i profili di Montmartre.
